私の弟は、テコンドーの有段者でした。全国大会でメダルを取ってくるような。
彼はいつも、自分の中にある不安と戦っていました。それを手なづけようとたくさんの力を外側に求めます。でも結局、それに打ち勝てずに、かなり若くして彼は人生を閉じます。
今、柔道をされる生徒さんが教室に来られます。その方の所作を見ている時、すごく思うことがあるのです。本当に力がある人は、それを誇示したりしません。
本当に必要な時に、その場を調和させたり、バランスを整えるために、その力を使います。その人がそういうことをしたわけではないですが、そうだろうなぁと思わせる所作でその人は常に行動しています。私は勘がいいので、それを感じ取るのです。
「力を愛と間違えている人が世の中にはいっぱいいるよ」と、教わりました。確かに、よく観察しているとそういう人はたくさんいるのです。不安や罪悪感を植え付けることで、人や自分をコントロールして、それを愛と呼ぶ人。自分が優位な立場に立つことを安心だと思う人。
でも、そうやって「力」を通貨として使っていたら、必ず、その人は、同じように力で支配される場面に出逢います。通貨は流通するからです。
合気道や柔道や太極拳が究極のところ、バランスや調和を目指すように、真の力とは、内側にも外側にも、対等な関係をもたらすために育まれる知恵なんだろうと思うのです。芸術もまた、そういう力や知恵のひとつなんだろうなぁと、思います。少なくとも、私の紡ぐ暮らしや、知恵や、力はそういうものを目指したいなぁと思うのです。
My younger brother was a black belt in Taekwondo; bringing home the medals from national tournaments.
He was always battling the anxiety within himself; seeking immense strength externally to tame it. In the end, unable to overcome it, he ended his life at a very young age.
A student who was also a judo medalist comes to our school now. Watching his movements, makes me realize something deep. True power doesn’t flaunt itself. They use it only when truly necessary—to harmonize the situation or restore balance. This student is not consciously doing so, but his actions consistently contain a quiet peace despite his outward behavior. My strong intuition and sense tell me that precisely.
Once someone taught me, “Many people mistake power for love.” Indeed. Those who control others and themselves by instilling anxiety or guilt, calling that love. Those who find security in maintaining a position of superiority.
However if you use “power” as currency as above, you will inevitably encounter situations where you yourself are dominated by power: currency circulates.
Just as Aikido, Judo, and Tai Chi ultimately aim for balance and harmony, I believe true power is the wisdom cultivated to foster equal relationships both within and without. Art, too, is surely one such form of that power and wisdom. At the very least, my hope is that the life I weave, the wisdom I hold, and the power I wield strive toward that.
